The Story of a Decade
What can be done in a decade? From 2012 to 2022, China has given its best answer.
In 2012, I was ten years old. When I stood in front of the television and saw the docking of the Shenzhou-9 spacecraft and the Tiangong-1 space station, I did not yet understand what hardship and glory mean. I asked my parents, “What are the people on the TV doing?” My parents smiled and said, “They are making stars for China.”
In 2022, I looked back on the past decade I have personally experienced as I started my university life. When The Internationale rang out at the closing ceremony of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, I suddenly understood what hardships and glory mean.
In this decade, Chinese people have witnessed so many unforgettable moments of pride. We have witnessed spacecraft such as Shenzhou, Mozi, and Chang'e soaring into the vast universe. We have witnessed the completion of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, which has brought China’s Mainland closer to Hong Kong and Macau. We have seen the number of China’s in-service aircraft carriers grow to three as China’s military forces continue to develop. We have seen the hosting of the Beijing Winter Olympics, which brought the world together. We have seen the successful holding of international summits such as the APEC and the G20 summits in China, which promoted cooperation among countries.
However, the story of the past decade is not only about the country, but also about each Chinese person. We have heard many touching stories about how people shake off poverty across this vast land. Countless talented young people have devoted themselves to helping those living in poor and remote areas escape from poverty. Many people have become better off with their own hands. In the past decade, through joint efforts of the government and the people, we have achieved all-round prosperity. The problem of poverty, which had plagued China for many years, has been fundamentally solved.
The ten-year story is also about ecological improvement. China’s ecological environment deteriorated due to a lack of awareness during the early years of China’s reform and opening up. As a result, a series of environmental problems ensued. However, we have reflected on our mistakes, adjusted our approach to economic development, and paid attention to ecological protection. We have carried out large-scale reforestation projects, introduced seasonal fishing moratoriums, and continued to improve our environmental laws and so on. Influenced by the concept of harmony between man and nature, China’s ecological environment has improved considerably.
During the past decade, we have also faced many challenges and difficulties, such as the SARS virus, conflicts around our territory, terrorism, and especially the Wuhan epidemic in early 2020. It touched the hearts of the nation. Faced with this urgent crisis, our government reacted quickly and responded positively to overcome the severe crisis with the cooperation of the whole nation. China, the first country affected by the epidemic, explored a rational response to the outbreak. At the same time, China has actively provided the international community with experience and supplies to combat the epidemic, helping the international community to overcome the crisis together. And the Chinese government has always put people’s health as a priority and provided Chinese wisdom for the worldwide fight against the epidemic.
China has undergone so many radical changes during this decade. In his report to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, President Xi Jinping said, “Only through unswerving determination and perseverance will we be able to live up to the times and the people.” The story of this decade has been written by the Communist Party of China and the people together. This decade is about the story of hardship and glory, the story of a generation.
