A Nation with Brilliant Culture
Graceful, joyful, meaningful...
This was how I felt about the Music Night festival yesterday. I have traveled far across the ocean as an exchange student with great ambition and passion for spreading Chinese culture and enhancing intercultural communication. Therefore, for the event, I wore our traditional clothes hanfu and performed a Chinese song called Pusaman written by Wen Tingyun, a poet from the Tang Dynasty. Before this song, the audience was deeply immersed in a K-pop song performed by a student from South Korea. His voice was like a burning fire, igniting people’s enthusiasm. I clenched my fists and was somehow in panic, as I doubted: “Will they enjoy my show? Can the audience truly understand the meaning and stories behind it?”
Suddenly the host called my name. I had completely no idea in my mind and went onto the stage with worries. “Wow! The clothes from a fairy tale!” I heard the voice of the audience. “Look! She is wearing a traditional costume! I saw it in Chinese costume dramas!” Gradually, I became more confident. So, they liked my appearance, right? And I should have confidence in my performance! Then I came to the very center of the stage and made a curtsy in the traditional Chinese style. “Ladies and gentlemen,” I said calmly and gently, “this is hanfu, a traditional Chinese costume that boasts thousands of years of history, like a gene imprinted in every Chinese people’s mind and soul.” I heard more responses from the audience, “It’s so beautiful! Can I take a photo?” Similar comments came to my ears, and I thought the performance had a good start.
“This song is about a lady’s feelings after falling in love. There are entirely different ways to express affection in Chinese and English. In Chinese, we have many implicit expressions and do not often show our love in a direct and open way.” Then I started my song. Many Chinese musical instruments, including guzheng, guqin and pipa, were involved in the soundtrack. When the must started, everyone immediately turned away from a noisy world and settled into tranquility, like hermits in the past.
The song lasted for three minutes, but after the song, I heard endless applause so that I even curtsied three times. Still excited, I started to ask myself: why was my performance so well received? At first, I thought perhaps it was because of my make-up, my soft voice, or even my good luck, but when I looked down at my hanfu, everything was suddenly clear.
The key is our brilliant culture.
As one of the four ancient empires, China, along with its culture, never faded no matter how time flew. Five thousand years of history is China’s best confidence to show the world its profound culture, great diversity, and fantastic innovation. With a dream of becoming a diplomat, I chose to be an exchange student in the UK to tell people what a real China is. By participating in events like the music festival, I found more people were interested in Chinese culture and even wanted to learn Chinese after my presentation.
My exchange student life in the UK has enabled me to spread Chinese culture and extend its global reach as a “civil diplomat.” As a Chinese student, I am and will always be proud of our country’s culture.
This is the real China, an ancient and young nation with great vitality and civilization.
