2022年英语写作大赛由中国外文局CATTI项目管理中心、中国外文界主办，大赛旨在为更好推动中华文化走出去，鼓励用外语讲述中国故事，通过赛事选拔更多优秀人才，全面提升当代大学生等各类群体的英语写作能力和素养，培养和发现优秀的英语写作人才，向世界阐释推介更多具有中国特色、体现中国精神、蕴藏中国智慧的优秀文化。

The True Story of an Oriental Nation
There is such a nation in the Orient as we would describe it as marvelous but unassuming and down-to-earth, renowned for its long-standing history and profound civilization. However, negative and even defamatory narratives have been menacingly directed at this nation’s ideology, social system, democracy, human rights, pandemic control policy, etc. As an ancient philosophical proverb goes, a stick is easily found to beat a dog. Unluckily, what the slanderers attempt to offend is a lion waking up from its nap. Over 1.4 billion people behind the colossus are the participants and witnesses of how this country started from scratch in modern history and became a world powerhouse. This is how we unveil the true story of China, the Chinese nation, and its people.
China is a country with vision and action. In Chinese people’s view, plans bring success, and a good start is halfway there. So we are used to formulating strategies and plans. For instance, the 14th Five-Year Plan stipulates that the main objectives of economic and social development during the Five-Year period are economic development, reform and opening up, social civilization, ecological civilization, people’s well-being, and national governance. This fully demonstrates our country’s resolution and vision.
China is a nation that is nourished by its national spirit. There are countless spirits encouraging Chinese people, but the one that supports the country walking through hardship and still has its influence is the Red Star or patriotic spirit. In the war-ridden years, the Red Star was behind the arduous trudge from Ruijin to Yan’an and the journey tramping over hill and dale. In the age of tech blockade, the Red Star represented the perseverance embodied in Chinese researchers who developed missiles, nuclear bombs, and artificial satellites which earned China a place in the world. In the new era, the Red Star epitomizes ordinary individuals who devote themselves to the development of China, such as Zhong Nanshan, who helped us sail through SARS and Covid-19 safe and sound, and Yuan Longping, who committed himself to eliminating hunger. Because we don’t forget where we came from, and we are clear about where we’re heading.
China is a community brimming with youth that are selfless and talented. In recent years, we have gone through moments of hardship, self-doubt, and pride. Through perseverance and solidarity, we Chinese people achieved remarkable results in the battle against the pandemic. But only we know that the path to hope and success is extremely hard and bitter. In this battle, youngsters played their parts as community volunteers, nucleic-acid testing staff, and medical personnel to contribute their time and energy to the safety and health of others and the development and prosperity of our nation. We prove to the whole country and the world with our actions that it’s time for us to be the pillar. The young generation not only devotes themselves to the battle against the virus, but also contributes themselves to the sports arena. In the 2022 Beijing Olympics, our athletes spared no efforts and tried to bring honor home. We may see their triumph and glory before the camera, but we barely know their exertion and hardship off-stage. In the Winter Olympics, many of the medal-winners were youngsters and some were even under 18, such as Quan Hongchan and Su Yuming.
This is the true story of China, unvarnished and applaudable.
